With the Spanish budget we were recently able to purchase two samsung galaxy tab 3s. This will be the beginning of creating recorded portfolios for students to listen to how they sound in Spanish and hear how they improve throughout their time at Wingra. This will also allow for more technology related projects and stations!

We acquire language through comprehensible input (listening and understanding). I will be teaching through a method called Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS). To focus on fluency, I will teach stories using the most frequent structures of the Spanish language in context.
Fluency comes by:
-Students focusing on the details of a story.
-Students NOT focusing on the language.
-Students picking up the language unconsciously.
Repetition is the key to learning. I will repeat structures until I can tell that the class has mastered them by gauging their responses to my questions during storytelling. Class gets interesting because all of the stories include surprise details that are guided by the students' suggestions.
Mark Davies in Spanish Frequency Dictionary said the 50 most common words in Spanish make up 60% of the language. Therefore, it is my goal to work on the 50 most common words and their structures to make our students confident in their usage.
I purposefully will be sheltering vocabulary in order to be repetitive enough for our students to learn to speak and thoroughly understand how to use high frequency words. This being said, I will not shelter grammar. Grammar is taught through meaning by getting students to feel the grammar. We will be using the structures that we need to tell our story (past, present, future, present progressive etc.).
What can students do to practice at home?
1. Students can illustrate the story and re-tell it at home using what they know.
2. Students can come up with their own ending to the story at home.
3. I will try to keep this website updated with structures that students can practice at home. They can write their own sentences similar to our class stories.
4. Students can look up vocabulary of interest at home, but again, being able to use words meaningful to them is what is important. Not the lists of vocabulary they memorize.
5. Students can play the games I have posted at www.wingra.weebly.com; however, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT THEY COME TO CLASS! They should be getting what they need in class.

¡Hola!
Me llamo maestra Cristina y es un placer aprender sobre ustedes y enseñar en Wingra durante este año escolar. My name is Cristina and it is a pleasure to learn about you all and teach at Wingra throughout this upcoming school year. In December 2011 I earned my K-12 Spanish teaching degree from UW-Madison. I have experience traveling and visiting Spain (and all over Europe), Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and Ecuador. I hope to continue to travel especially to Brazil, Morocco and Argentina because I have taken Portuguese and Arabic classes and love learning and experiencing new cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. I am excited to get to know each one of you and your children so that I can best use my talents to serve, listen, and learn from you. ¡Hasta pronto! (See you soon!)
